How to Keep Your Air Conditioner Running Well Through the Fall

August 24, 2016

Your air conditioner has had a lot of work to do this summer and we still have some more heat coming. Just because the date on the calendar has moved over to fall doesn’t mean you’re through with your AC for the season. Keeping up with annual AC maintenance, while also following a handful of other pointers, can help you maintain your air conditioner while staying comfy too.

Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit

Debris can build up around your outside unit, particularly during the fall. When the time comes to rake up the leaves in your yard, make sure to rake up the leaves and debris around your air conditioner. Debris can impact air flow, causing your system to work harder and wear down quicker. We want your air conditioner to last as long as it can.

Raise the Temperature on Your Thermostat

Have your thermostat set at the highest temperature you can while still remaining comfortable. Whenever possible, use other cooling methods such as fans. The lower you set your thermostat, the harder your system will have to work to attain that temperature. You may think shutting off your unit completely will save on energy and help your system, but that just creates more ground for it to make up when you flip it back on. It will have to work harder for a longer amount of time, which is another contributing factor that could lead to untimely system failure.
