Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, most of them can be tracked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not handled, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself a bit of time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system could be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A few other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
